Why a Zo Must Go project is writing about Ryan Alter
Zo Must Go cannot succeed at what it set out to do if council members like Ryan Alter are never exposed for their betrayal of the progressive core and the causes that made Austin the city it is today.
Replacing one council member does not fix a council that says the right thing in public and delivers the developer's outcome at the dais. The pattern is the point. A forty-five year agreement on the Colorado River, a billion dollars of gas authorized behind a closed door, a tax increase voters rejected by twenty-six points, and 237 of 238 developer rezonings waved through are not one member's failures. They are a governing habit, and District 5 has been one of its most reliable votes.
Ryan Alter has spent his term borrowing the language of Austin progressives while voting against the causes that built this city. He talks about the river and then votes to pave it. He writes the rule requiring gas plants to come back to Council in public, then defends the deal made in secret. He warns that data centers threaten our water and our power ninety-eight days after voting to let them in for forty-five years.
That is the betrayal. Naming it in District 5 is the same work as naming it in District 9.
Who we are
Zo Must Go is a general-purpose political action committee funded by local donors who want to see Austin governed by elected representatives who speak for local neighborhoods, environmental and climate issues, and good government through genuine and pragmatic solutions that benefit all of Austin.
The committee's campaign finance reports will be filed with the Office of the Austin City Clerk and the Texas Ethics Commission as public records. Anyone who wants to know who funds this work will be able to read it in the filings, which is the standard we apply to everyone else.
Privacy policy
This is a static website. It is built to inform voters, not to profile them.
Nothing. AlterCourseAustin sets no cookies, runs no analytics, embeds no advertising or social media tracking pixels, and contains no forms. We do not ask for your name, address, email, phone number or any other personal information, and we have no way to associate a visit with an individual.
Like any website, this site is delivered by a hosting provider whose servers keep standard technical logs, which may include your IP address, browser type, the page requested and a timestamp. Those logs are generated by the host, not by us. We do not use them to build profiles, and we do not combine them with any other data.
Pages on this site load typefaces from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). Requesting those files sends your IP address to Google, which is governed by Google's own privacy policy. This is the only third-party request the site makes. All images, stylesheets and other assets are served from this domain.
We link extensively to news organizations, city databases and public documents so you can verify every claim yourself. Once you follow a link you are on someone else's site, subject to their privacy practices, not ours.
This site is intended for voters and is not directed at children. We knowingly collect no information from anyone.
Because we collect nothing, there is nothing to opt out of, nothing to delete and nothing to request a copy of. If you would prefer that your browser not request the fonts described above, blocking those two domains will not affect the content of this site.

Every factual claim on this site is sourced on the sources page, most of it to the City of Austin's own published council vote record. Characterizations of that record are Zo Must Go's opinion. Quotations attributed to Ryan Alter come from his public statements at council meetings and his own published writing, as reported by the outlets we cite.
If you believe something here is inaccurate, send the specific claim and the correction to info@altercourseaustin.com. Documented errors get corrected and noted.
